James Todd Smith, known by his stage name LL Cool J, is an American rapper, record producer, actor and businessman from Queens, New York. With the resounding success of the single "I Need a Beat" and Radio LP, LL Cool J became one of the first hip-hop artists with mainstream success with Kurtis Blow and Run-DMC. LL Cool J has released 13 studio albums and two of the biggest hit resumes. His 12th album, Exit 13, is the last album on his long-term contract with Def Jam Recordings. LL Cool J has appeared in many films including In Too Deep, Any Given Sunday, Deep Blue Sea, S.W.A.T., Mindhunters and Edison. He is currently playing the role of Agent Sam Hanna of NCIS in the crime television series CBS NCIS: Los Angeles. LL Cool J is also a host of Lip Sync Battle on Paramount Network.
In 1985, his debut album, Radio, went platinum, establishing him as one of the first major rap superstars. His 1990 studio album, Mama Said Knock You Out, is widely regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. After appearing in the films Any Given Sunday and SWAT, he joined the cast of the CBS series NCIS: Los Angeles in 2009.
