Peebles left Rutgers University in 1979 to become a real-estate sales agent and appraiser. He was 23 when he founded RDP Corporation, a residential real estate appraisal company. He was later appointed by Marion Barry to Washington’s Board of Equalization and Review, the real property tax appeals board now known as the Board of Real Property Assessments and Appeals. Peebles turned 24 in the following year, and Marion Barry, Washington’s mayor, appointed him as Chairperson of that Board. He served there until 1988.
In 1996, Peebles redeveloped the 1930s Royal Palm hotel in Miami Beach. The Royal Palm Resort became the nation’s first major hotel developed and owned by an African American.
